Every month we ask one individual in our network a few questions about their way into tech, their motivation and their lessons learned.

Let’s start from the beginning. Tell us about where you’re from!

I’m half German, half American and lived in many different places when I was growing up, including Greece, Ireland and the subtropical island of Bermuda. On average, we moved every two years. Looking back, it really forced me to leave my comfort zone and adapt to new environments, different languages and foreign cultures extremely quickly. Today, I work with my team of three superwomen and two supermen from the Impact Hub Colab in Zurich and live nearby.

What valuable advice did you get from your parents?

My parents taught me to pursue my passion, arguing that when you do something you truly love, you are sure to become really good at it and, more importantly, less likely to give up even when circumstances get tough. At the same time, they led by example when it came to working hard: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” they always said.

How did you become interested in tech?

During my studies, I wanted to gain more practical experience in marketing. Since I had already spent six months as an intern in a rather traditional company, I was keen to apply to a more modern one. That is when an internship opportunity at a large tech company caught my eye. Thanks to the recommendation of an alumnus from my university, who was working there at the time, I was invited to an interview. I believe I first caught a glimpse of the huge impact tech has on marketing while preparing for my interview. I read about various marketing tools such as Google Ads, with which marketing performance can be exactly measured, budgets easily adjusted and optimization activities totally automated. It blew my mind. Still, many small and medium-sized businesses do not know how to integrate or even use these tools and take maximum advantage of them to grow their business. This is where the LA Preuss team comes in!

What aspects of your work are you proudest of?

I love when the work we do at LA Preuss impacts other businesses in a positive way; whether that means building elaborate campaigns to generate more sales for an e-shop or running an A/B test to help a small business adapt their offer to better meet actual demand. And when enough of their customers are impacted in a way that enables them to grow, our team has the opportunity to grow with them—personally and in size. That makes me really proud.

What drives you at work?

My team! Having started out as a lone wolf, work has become so much more worthwhile now that LA Preuss is a team. As a team, we can tackle much bigger projects and serve many more customers than before. Plus, working with a handpicked team of passionate marketeers is a lot of fun.

What has been your toughest challenge you faced while working in tech?

Tech is changing our world at a tremendous speed. Therefore, even as a digital native, choosing the right tools to work with is challenging when there are so many possibilities and the potential for optimization is endless. At the same time, staying open toward change and radical innovation while managing and reacting to these variables as they continuously change the way we work remains my toughest challenge to date.

What advice would you give other women in tech?

Believe in yourself because you will only ever get a glimpse of what you are truly capable of once you have the courage to just do it!

2020 the company La Preuss was renamed to LA CLICK and meanwhile includes a team of 12 people!
