Chrys Francisco

Every month we ask one individual in our network a few questions about their way into tech, their motivation and their lessons learned.

Let’s start from the beginning. Tell us about where you’re from!

I was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, a metropolitan area half the size of the canton of Zurich, but with six times the population (yeah, super dense!). I lived and studied there most of my life, but I also did further education in the United States and in Portugal.

What valuable advice did you get from your parents?

They have always believed in me and encouraged me. Through their constant support I felt that they subconsciously advised me not to be afraid of pursuing things I’m interested in.

How did you become interested in tech?

I was fascinated with computers when I was really young. Through the influence of my cousin, I started coding at age 13. I was especially interested in developing for the web, and at the same time found web design to be an outlet for my creativity.

What aspects of your work are you proudest of?

I’m proud to be working for a company (Google) that has a huge impact to the world. And, in that light, I’m also proud that I get to design products and experiences that affect a lot of users in the world.

What drives you at work?

Constant learning. I’m surrounded by amazing people at work and it both inspires me and drives me to be better at what I do.

What advice would you give other women in tech?

Don’t be afraid to speak up. Because if you don’t, those thoughts will only stay as thoughts, and they will never have the chance to be acted upon. What if it’s the next great idea? If you don’t say something, then it’s as if that thought never existed.
